Tamar Chaduneli: Physical Plant. Script for R|M

Residential area of Rustavi, view through a windshield, 1970. National Library of Georgia.

Physical Plant. Script for R|M is a long-term project initiated and conceptualized by Georgian artist Tamar Chaduneli. Structured as a series of workshops, the program unfolds across two countries—Georgia and Germany—as well as within digital space. The project will culminate in a group exhibition at the Rustavi Historical Museum (Georgia) and in Munich, alongside a publication that documents the research and artistic outcomes. The forthcoming workshop marks the beginning of this ongoing artistic inquiry.

Physical Plant. Script for R|M seeks to decipher the narratives embedded in industrial urban landscapes and to trace, reflect on, and artistically negotiate their impact on individuals and communities. From the emergence of the factory system and its socio-economic implications to contemporary forms of digital-industrial spaces, Physical Plant. Script for R|M engages with both historical and current perspectives. It draws on theoretical texts, films, and artistic works to outline a social imaginary—one that remains open and unpredictable.

Informed by the current socio-political climate in Georgia—where widespread protests continue in defense of the country’s European identity—the project turns its attention to the aesthetic and ideological layers in an industrial cityscape of post-soviet Georgia.

Focusing on the city of Rustavi, built to serve specific ideological and economic visions since 1945, the workshop explores how built urban industrial environments contribute to shaping new social realities across decades. In parallel, the project introduces a comparative lens through the study of Munich’s urban industrial development - specifically its post-war rebuilding and the ongoing impact of high-tech industries on the city's spatial and social fabric.

Together with Tamar Chaduneli, participants will engage in critical analysis and individual artistic responses to questions such as: What visions of the future are encoded in architectural and infrastructural planning? How do people inhabit, resist, or transform the narratives inscribed in these spaces? Through collaborative dialogue, mapping practices, and artistic production, Physical Plant. Script for R|M supports participants in developing new artistic works that reflect on urban dynamics from both personal and political perspectives.

Tamar Chaduneli (b. 1991, Georgia) is a conceptual artist and researcher. Her sculptural work explores the intersection of psychogeography and digital sociology. Often driven by site-specific research, she examines the impacts of industrialization and digitalization processes, questioning the role of architecture not only as a built environment but as an image that reflects broader cultural and political dynamics.
